Council Tax Guide

Most full-time students studying at the University of St Andrews are exempt from paying Council Tax.

To receive this exemption, you'll normally need to apply directly to Fife Council and provide evidence of your student status.

At a glance

The exemption is not automatic. You should apply to Fife Council as soon as possible after your tenancy begins, and be ready to provide evidence that you are a full-time student.

1. How to Apply

You should apply for your Council Tax exemption as soon as possible after your tenancy begins.

Applications can be made through the Fife Council website. Apply here.

When Should I Apply?

We recommend applying as soon as possible after the start of your tenancy to avoid unnecessary Council Tax correspondence.

Good to know

Your University of St Andrews matriculation details may be required as part of the application.

For further information, please visit the Fife Council website.

2. Student Status

You may be asked to provide confirmation that you are a full-time student. This is normally available from the University of St Andrews.

3. Mixed Households

  • If everyone living in the property is a full-time student, the property will usually be exempt from Council Tax.
  • If one or more occupants are not full-time students, different rules may apply and Council Tax may become payable.

Important

If you're unsure of your circumstances, please contact Fife Council directly.
